Louisiana Contractor Licensing

The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors governs the licensing requirements for contractors operating within the state of Louisiana. Louisiana requires licensure for almost every individual or entity seeking to perform construction and related work, and there are multiple categories for contracting types including commercial, residential, and home improvement.

A commercial contractor license is required for commercial projects where full contract price, including labor and materials, exceeds the minimum threshold amount. These commercial projects also require, with limited exceptions, that subcontractors and specialty trade contractors be licensed as well.

A residential contractor license is required for all residential projects which exceed the minimum residential threshold amount. Residential contracting includes home improvements, or the construction of new one-to-four unit family dwellings. As with commercial projects, subcontractors and specialty trades engaged in a residential project must, with limited exceptions, be licensed. Residential building contractors must also submit certificates of insurance evidencing compliance with various insurance requirements.

Home improvement contractors are required to register with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors to perform services within a certain range of prices. However, contractors who hold valid commercial or residential licenses with the Board are exempt from this registration requirement. Home improvement contractors are also required to submit certificates of insurance evidencing compliance with the various insurance requirements. If the home improvement contract price, including all labor, materials, and related expenses, exceeds the residential license threshold amount, the home improvement contractor is required to be licensed as a residential building contractor.
